Born To Rock’n’Roll – My Way / Wonderous Place – Rock and Roll… All Night Long
The Cosh Boys are a Finnish Rock’n’Roll band whose name comes from a 1953 British film noir starring Joan Collins. The fact that this is a British movie is not a detail. The musical inspiration of the Cosh Boy, even when they play American tunes like Eddie Cochran’s, is to be found in Great Britain. From the British pioneers of Rock’n’Roll to the early/mid-seventies bands like Matchbox, Wild Angels, Flying Saucers, etc. And like most of these bands, the Cosh Boys play with an electric bass, giving them a round and warm sound.
The EP kicks off with a superb version of Matchbox’s Born to Rock’n’Roll. It’s very refreshing to hear such a simple yet efficient brand of Rock’n’Roll, played with no afterthoughts other than the pleasure of rocking and having fun. Next is a revved-up version of Cochran’s My Way. The sound of the bass mixed with the drummer playing the rhythm on the rim of his drums gives the song this typical 70’s Rockabilly sound. Even more surprising is their cover of Billy Fury’s Wondrous Place. The Finnish quatuor turns the song into a Shadows-like instrumental, and, believe it or not, it works. More than that, it’s a killer. The EP ends with Rock and Roll… All Night Long, that lives up to its name.
There’s no revolution of the genre here (but that’s not what we ask for) but only four guys having a hell of a time playing that good old Rock’n’Roll.
