Ballad Of A Starving Artist – Rocking Chair
The Modbeats are a New Jersey band based in Cherry Hill, formed by Philip Dunn (vocals and guitar), Joe Mandia (guitar), Scott Matison (bass), and Fizz (drums). As far as I know, Ballad of A Starving Artist is their debut single. The band takes things where Buddy Holly left them and brings them to 2024, borrowing all the good influences you can find in between. The title track is highly melodic, with a haunting crystal clear guitar and a solid beat. I particularly appreciate Dunn’s voice, which counterbalances the whole with its desperate, even flayed side, kinda reminiscent of Wreckless Eric (during his Beat Group Electric period).
The B-side is a tad wilder, adding some Byrds/Psychedelia/Garage influences to the mix for good effects.
The Modbeats never sound as if locked into any revival. On the contrary, their open mind allows them to draw on 70 years of music and create music that, while being referenced, is no less highly personal.
Take my advice, and follow this band closely. As for me, I’m eagerly waiting to hear them on long distance.
